You are living your life and things seem to be going well, but then one day, it’s like everything just crumbles. This happens to Savi Sachdev, the main character of the movie SAVI, portrayed by Divya Khossla Kumar. She is a simple housewife who now leads a happy normal life in Liverpool with her husband Nakul (Harshvardhan Rane) and their kid, Adi. But then, BAM! Nakul ends up being arrested for the murder of Stefani Fowler, his boss, and their life changes drastically.
Nakul is an employee of a construction company, and now he is accused of killing Stefani. Well, it’s pretty damning—Nakul had a motive because Stefani had humiliated him in the past, his fingerprints are on the fire extinguisher used to kill her, and his coat has Stefani’s blood on it.
Despite Nakul’s assertion of his innocence, he is found guilty and condemned to life imprisonment.
It gets worse still when Nakul finds himself behind bars at the infamous Shrewsbury Prison. There, a gangster by the name of Razaq begins to cause him trouble, insisting on ensuring Nakul hides some drugs for him.
Nakul does not agree and gets thrashed for that. Razaq is placed in solitary confinement and the duration is just one month, and he is out for a war. When Nakul’s life is in such deep trouble Savi gets fed up. She will free her husband from prison if it is the last thing she will ever do on earth.
When searching for information on how to stage a prison escape, Savi gets to read about Joydeep Paul (Anil Kapoor), a man who has escaped prison seven times. Frustrated by the loss, she convinces him to give her some pointers on how to achieve the impossible.
Savi Movie: Plot
That being said, it is high time to discuss the movie in question. SAVI is a remake of the French film Pour Elle from 2008, but it has rather a powerful idea behind it.
Written by Parveez Sheikh and Aseem Arora, the screenplay of this movie is quite sharp and has ample entertainment in the second half. But let’s face it – the first part of the movie is rather boring.
It is not so bad though it does not draw attention in the way it ought to do so. The intermission is taken at a time when you are just sitting there bored, waiting, and thinking okay, what else?
The dialogues are alright by Aseem Arora with a hint and hue of black comedy from time to time. That said, the first half could have benefited from a bit of polishing to fully draw the audience in.
Here’s the good news, though: as soon as the second half comes to the scene, SAVI gets into full swing. Savi proceeds with the plan, and the movie becomes much more interesting due to the rising tension.
The climax? Oh yes, it has a couple of plot twists that few viewers will be able to guess, which is perfect for a thriller.

Savi Movie: Direction and Cinematic Liberties
The director, Abhinay Deo, can be credited for maintaining the movie running time to a reasonable 2 hours and 6 minutes.
He does use some comic relief at some times depending on the seriousness of the situation. Deo manages to give and take between black comedy and suspense without making the movie seem like it’s two different films.
However, one has to remember that some of the things portrayed in the film are not 100% true to life since the film is based on the events, not a documentary.
For instance, the manner in which Savi is able to escape with her husband from prison seems a bit unrealistic. However, there is this whole ‘button’ aspect that just feels all too convenient. If you are the kind of reader who prefers your thrillers to be utterly believable, you may find these parts a bit hard to swallow.
However, the movie promos may make you think you are in for something different all together. If you went in expecting a legal drama or a basic crime thriller then you may find yourself surprised (or a bit baffled).
Savi Movie: Performances
Moving to the performances, which are unquestionably one of the strongest sides of SAVI. I have to appreciate the acting of Divya Khosla Kumar, who has played the role of Savi in this movie.
From being a simple and ordinary housewife, she becomes a strong and independent woman and Divya has done a good job in portraying this change. While she might not be at her best during the first half of the movie, she nails the second half perfectly.
Harshvardhan Rane, who essays Nakul, is as dependable as always in his portrayal of the character.
He has that touch of weakness in him and that streak of determination that makes you want to see him succeed, especially when all hope seems to be lost. Also, he has this personality that you cannot help but love his character.
And then there is Anil Kapoor. He comes a little later in the film, but, boy, does he bring the thunder. His character, Joydeep Paul, is this mysterious escape artist, and Kapoor plays him with just the right amount of gravitas and sly humor. Despite the fact that he’s absent for most of the film, he manages to make an impact.
The other actors also give good performances as well. Himanshi Choudhry as DI Ayesha Hassan, Raageshwari Loomba Swaroop as Simrit, and the others all do fine as well, although the characters are not fully developed.
The music in SAVI isn’t going to blow your mind, but there is one track that stands out: One the song in the movie is “Khol Pinjra. ” It is catchy and appropriate for the movie’s theme. That being said, there is nothing wrong with the background score composed by Arkadeep Karmakar. It gets super intense when it needs to without being overly gratuitous about it.

Savi Hit or Flop
So, here is my overall evaluation of SAVI. Well, it goes both ways. The movie has a good plot, especially in the second half, and the cast is excellent. All the lead actors, including Divya Khossla Kumar, Harshvardhan Rane, and Anil Kapoor deliver their best, making the film more watchable.
However, one can identify some drawbacks which are clearly present. The first half is a little dull and the movie requires you to believe in certain rather convenient occurrences. It is a satisfying ending thus might feel slightly contrived to some audiences.
At the box office, SAVI didn’t set the world on fire but it is also not a total failure. On OTT, the movie has outperformed Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja. It is one of those movies that can be watched by fans of thrillers who do not mind some cinematographic fiction.
Therefore, if you are seeking for an exciting ride with some good acting and a couple of twists thrown in the middle of the movie, then SAVI could be the perfect addition to your weekend movie list.
In the current list of IMDb’s top 100 popular films, dominated by English movies, four Indian films have secured their positions. Previously, Maharaja was leading, followed by Kill and Kalki 2898 AD.
